County Mayo is a paradise for the Angler. Not only has it numerous lakes and rivers, but it also has a 960 km coastline. Waters are well stocked with fish and due to the excellent water quality it is great for Trout and Salmon fishing. From 2007 there will be no more drift-netting which will have very positive effects on the number of Salmon being able to come up the rivers.

Derryhick Lake. To start with the Derryhick lake were we have our cottages. This is one of the smaller lakes with a size of only 75 acres but it is very well stocked with pike. Fishing can be done from the shores or by renting our boat. The deepest point on the lake is 14 meters. The lake is also well stocked with Roach, Perch and the odd Trout and Eel. As the Fishery Board actively protects the Trout and Salmon stocks on the big lakes like Conn & Cullen, they catch pike from these lakes and release them in the smaller lakes like the Derryhick Lake and Lake Levalley. This guarantees good pike fishing on the Derryhick lake almost all year round.

Lough Conn & Cullen. These 2 big lakes are connected with the Moy river and are ideal for Salmon and Trout fishing. We can arrange licences, boats and guides for these lakes. It is advisable to go out with a guide at least the first day you fish one of these lakes. You will need someone to show you the best places to fish especially on a very big lake like Lough Conn which is almost 14000 acres.

The River Moy. The Moy rises in the Ox Mountains and flows approximately 68 miles to where it enters the sea at Killala Bay. The river is rated as one of the best Salmon rivers in Europe with catches of between 8000 and 10000 Salmon annually on Rod and Line. The Salmon season opens on the first day of February and continues through to the last day of September. The Spring fishing is at its height from mid-March to mid-May. At this time Grilse start entering the Moy system and this run peaks around mid-June. Depending on the water conditions, fresh sea liced Grilse continue to enter the river until early August. Later in this month Harvest/Autumn fish start travelling upstream. These fish are not quite as silver as Springers or Grilse but none the less, prove to be great sport. As and from 1/1/99, all commercial fishing on the River Moy ceased. This now allows many thousands of Salmon to escape to the upper Moy and thus ensuring a healthy future for the river. Spring Salmon are considered to be the king of Salmon with weights varying anywhere between 8 lbs and 16 lbs. There are a few salmon in the 20 lbs region landed each year by Moy anglers. Grilse are a smaller, livelier fish weighting between 4 lbs and 8 lbs and again, give some exceptional sport to the Angler. Harvest/Autumn are the last of the Salmon to enter the River during the angling season. These fish are on average 8lbs weight.

During the Summer months, Sea Trout fishing on the Moy Estuary can be productive with fish averaging 1-1/2 lbs. Traditional methods used are Sand Eel and Mackerel strips or spinning, but more recently, fly fishing is becoming popular. The Moy River is devided into a number of private fisheries. We cam advise you and help you with booking day permits.

Sea Angling. As Mayo is for a big part bordering the Atlantic Ocean, there is great opportunity for Sea-Angling. From Clew Bay, around Achill Island up to Belmullet and back to Killala Bay there are numerous marks for shore fishing with a large variety of species, to name some; Pollock, Wrasse, Ray, dog-fish, conger, Sea Trout and flounder. We can advise you on marks, tides and bate to use.

We can also help you with booking a charter boat and fish on the open sea. Depending on weather and season, you can either board a boat in Westport, Killala or on Achill island. Numerous species can be caught.
